My new grandson is Wesley Thatcher Greenawalt and ironically he arrived on my grandmother's birthday, May 7th. Congratulations to Sage and Savannah and of course to Gavin who was promoted to Big Brother! The little guy arrived at 5:56am and weighed in at 7lbs. 9oz. and 20in. long. I got to hold him while he slept and sang to him the same song that I used to love to sing to my kids, Golden Slumbers by the Beatles.
Talk about waiting until the last minute...I did this belly painting with my daughter-in-law and the very next day she went into labor. I think it was Lori who suggested flowers since he would be born in May and then I suggested a blue lotus flower for it's beauty and it's interesting geometry. I once believed that the pinnacle of an art career would be to get an illustration for the cover of a novel. Well, if that is the case, I have arrived. I was hired by Brick Cave Media, a successful book publisher in Phoenix, to illustrate a book cover for their newest author Colette Black. Getting busted for coming home late becomes the least of Quint Silver’s problems when he finds himself outside, beneath a full moon, in the middle of a blackout. Ethereal, humanoid creatures rise from every shadow he crosses, intent on smothering him. With Chelsea Price, the childhood friend he secretly loves, they discover the truth behind his mother's death and begin to uncover the mysteries surrounding his unpredictable gift. If his paranoid father discovers them Quint will be grounded for the rest of his teenage life. Adding to his problems, Quint has caught the interest of a magical society hidden within their community. Two clans of warring supernatural beings are vying for dominance, recruiting every soldier they can find. And they want him.
The illustration was done in Photoshop and features some interesting light and shadow play along with a dynamic perspective. It was interesting getting feedback from the publisher and author as I submitted progress shots. Most of their input was incorporated into the final art piece and definately made it better. They say that sometimes the cover sells the book so here's hoping that I contributed to a lot of sales for Colette Black.
The Odysea complex in Scottsdale has quite a few attractions already, but now they can boast that they have Arizona's first ice bar. It's called Polar Play and it is a great way to beat the heat and go into a 23-degree Fahrenheit freezer to drink and play games. After you pay a fee to get in to the experience you are given a nice warm faux fur coat (or just a regular coat if you prefer) and gloves as you make your way into the cold. There are a few games for kids and adults like ice checkers and shuffle board and for the adults there is a liquer luge that adds to the ambience. The walls, the sculptures and even the bar itself were carved from over 300 blocks of ice by artist Mark Armitage
. There are some educational treats for the kids including an app that guides them through the North Pole and South Pole features of the space.
As the lighting designer for the project, I was able to introduce a beautiful array of color changing LED lighting behind the walls of ice that glimmers in each facet. There is an iconic laser projection on the feature wall of the Aurora Borealis, aka the Northern Lights, that dynamically ebbs and flows. Plus there is a series of accent lights in the open ceiling grid that are fitted with dichroic lenses to add even more colorful splashes. One of the interesting decisions for the lights in this space was whether they needed to be waterproof. Let that sink in for a minute.
